It’s been an exciting and busy month for GIA with GreenwayREADS, the launch of LevelUP, and prep for our Fall Showcase.

Show up and Show out!

On October 14th, the Melrose Trading Post (MTP) Student workers had their first dev (developmental) session as part of Greenway’s LevelUP Program!

Students were able to discuss what motivates them to show up to school and work with Greenway Arts Alliance’s Co-Founder Pierson Blaetz and Director of Student Programming Christina Carrera. It was an afternoon filled with fun, team-bonding, and growth and we can’t wait for our next one coming up in November!

A ‘Hauntingly’ Good Time: GreenwayREADS was a smashing success!

For the past three weeks, high school students from all over LAUSD visited the Greenway Court Theatre to see the Native Voices production of Haunted by Tara Moses as a part of the GreenwayREADS program.

The program allows students to engage with the chosen text in a classroom with a teaching artist who develops arts-based activities and workshops highlighting its themes. Students then have the opportunity to view a production at Greenway that culminates all of the teachings from the program.

And the reviews are in… the students had a fantastic time watching the show, learning about the Landback Movement with the post-show talkback, and getting an essential history lesson about early 2000s Britney Spears and Mariah Carey.

Follow The Yellow Brick Road!

Last Sunday, at MTP’s annual Halloween Dog Costume Contest, we had GIA’s very own Kai give a sneak peek of her incredible performance in the Land of Oz showcase that had us all dreaming of somewhere over the rainbow!

You can see her and the rest of the star-studded cast of the Land of Oz perform Friday, November 14th, at 5 pm! The students have been working tirelessly all semester and are ecstatic to showcase all of their hard work with songs from Wicked, The Wizard of Oz, and The Wiz franchises. Admission is free so bring everyone you know and join us for a night at Emerald City. •
